Review: Create Bikes Originals Fixie from Reid Cycles

When Reid contacted me to review the Create Originals Fixie I wondered why they’d introduce a new fixie to their line-up when they already had the lovely Harrier…until I saw this bike…       The Create is a brand from England that hasn’t had a presence in Australia until now. Their fixies come in two flavours, the C8 and its bigger better brother the Create Originals Fixie, which is the one I’ …

Review of the Papillionaire Racer

I was fortunate to be given a Papilionaire Racer for the week to ride and review. There was some talk about me reviewing the Papillionaire Classic but when I saw the Racer there was no doubt in my mind which one I wanted to take home. The bike has an old-timey romantic look of motorpacing with leather helmets on, of racing down country lanes in woolen jerseys. Not that they rode bikes like this wh …

Reid Cycles Falco Elite Review

The Revelation It’s been about a decade since I owned a road bike with gears. In that time I’ve stayed faithful to my love of all that is good and just and kind in the world. I have not lusted after gears, coveted my neighbor’s derailleurs, nor have I taken in vain or blasphemed thy fixie (though I have mocked occasionally and will probably mock again for it is said I am the one for whom mockery c …

Review: Brown Jersey Divvy Van

To paraphrase William Shakespeare, this shit nearly rides itself. The Divvy Van from Brown Jersey felt almost effortless as I glided along the Gold Coast foreshore and the bike fell into corners just by thinking about them. The Divvy Van had a “just right” feel. (I hope Kellogs haven’t trademarked that. I’d hate Brown Jersey to get sued.) Jumping on the bike for the first time it was like the …

Review: Updated Corsa from Single Speed Cycles

When you’re riding someone else’ bike you can do one of two things. One is treat it with the kind of care and respect you would want from someone who borrowed your bike. The other is thrash it. It’s not like it’s your bike so hey, go nuts.My official policy is to treat bikes in my care with proper respect, not like my poor long suffering Mojo which gets ridden rail hail or shine. So there are some …

Sneak Peak: Single Speed Cycles updated Corsa

Anodized rims. That’s all I’m saying. When my wife saw them she went “ooh” and “ahh” in ways normally only reserved for other people’s babies. As usual my photography can’t do it justice but even in my photo above you can see how the anodizing appears to change colour from deep red to bright pink depending on which angle and what light you have when viewing, like a clever optical illusion. In fact …

Reid Cycles Single Speed / Fixie Review

Thursday night I whipped a full hour off my previous best for a 35km ride on the Reid. When I say previous best, I am of course referring to this ride. It had been almost a week since I picked up the Reid and finally a day clear from the rain and stomach bugs that plagued this week’s cycling so I took the Reid single speeder out for a proper hit-out. And let me say that when the bike isn’t being h …

Jube Customs single-speed fixie bike review

One of the first things that struck me about Jube Custom bikes was the paintwork. There’s a great deal of subtlety in the colours. And there are graphics. Jube is somewhat bucking a trend in the fixie field by putting stickers on their bikes. On a hunch I asked Jube Custom’s Scott (man  behind Jim Junky, the mad genius fictional figurehead) how many female buyers he has and he said, …

The Corsa, Cheap Fixie from Single Speed Cycles

“Hey, nice bikes,” my neighbour called as I left the driveway on the Corsa by Single Speed Cycles. For a bike that is currently selling at $299 that was a good start. Alder has certainly never commented on any of my regular rides. So, let’s stop for a photo opportunity… Yes, it does look nice. Okay, moving on. The bike was a demo that had seen a good year of action. Despite that it was in pretty …
